breman museum internships guidelines |
Internships are available for students and volunteers wishing to gain experience and to undertake projects at The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum. Please read through the following guidelines before preparing your proposal for an internship at the museum. Internships are available in these areas:
| • | Archives |
| • | Education |
| • | Library |
| • | Marketing/Public Relations |
Be aware that internships require a commitment to work 100 hours or more during a semester (four-month) period. You may propose working for a shorter period of time, but internships require at least five hours of work per week. The Breman does not currently offer curator internships, although Web exhibitions may be proposed as part of a project.
Working at The Breman will allow you complete a project and be part of a collaborative team. You will gain practical skills and a broad understanding of museum or educational institution practices through an internship. Internships are unpaid.
During your internship, you will be expected to take part in the professional and collegial environment at The Breman, take directions from your supervisor, complete tasks in a timely manner with due care for artifacts and the confidentiality of interview subjects, and work effectively with your supervisor and co-workers. Basic word processing and office skills are required for most positions.
To propose an internship:
- Learn about The Breman. Familiarize yourself with the museum through perusing the website and, if possible, making a site visit.
- Contact Haven Hawley to propose an internship in a specific area of the museum’s operations. You will need to submit your cv or resume and a short description of your skills and training, as well as the time that you are willing to commit to an internship. Send your application materials to haven@thebreman.org.
- You will be contacted to come in for an internship tour and an interview to discuss your proposed internship. We will discuss the types of projects that meet the museum’s needs and your interests. Within two weeks, you will receive word whether a suitable internship can be arranged. (Please note that working space is very limited at the museum; we only offer internships when ongoing projects allow us to do so.)
- You will be expected to begin work within about a week of your acceptance of the internship. After you have met with your supervisor during the first week of your internship, you will be asked to submit a one-paragraph statement of your understanding of the internship project and commitment. Please give this to your supervisor so that s/he can verify that all details of the internship expectations are clear to both you and museum staff. If your school’s internship program requires a specific evaluation at the end of your work, please supply this to your supervisor.
- We recommend that you keep a weekly log of your internship. This will help you to document your hours, type of work, and experience.
- Concluding evaluations: At the end of your internship, you will prepare a one-page summary of your internship experience for your supervisor at The Breman. Independently, your supervisor will write a brief evaluation and discuss this with you. The evaluation will be sent to your school’s internship coordinator upon completion of the project terms defined at the start of your internship.
