Congregation Rodeph Shalom, Rome

Congregation Rodeph Shalom, 1950s.

Congregation Rodeph Shalom was formally established in 1875, although there was a documented Jewish presence in Rome as early as 1833.

This collection includes minutes, programs, membership material, and cemetery records dating from 1931-1988, and reflect not only the congregation's history, but the many positive contributions that Jewish Romans have made to the growth and development of their community.

Temple Beth Israel, Macon

Confirmation class, Temple Beth Israel, 1905

Temple Beth Israel, established in 1959, is the second oldest congregation in the state (only preceded by Mickve Israel in Savannah). The records, which date from the synagogue's inception, include minutes, correspondence, cemetery documents, programs, and scrapbooks.

Each minute book holds a treasure-trove of information on subjects dating back to the Civil War and Reconstruction. In an entry dated May 25, 1862, the congregation's Board resolved "that those members which were absent and engaged in the war, shall be exempt of dues from the time they left, until returned." Other entries comment upon the membership's concern regarding how best to invest Confederate dollars.
