Why Support The Breman?
The Berman is committed to meeting the needs of the multi-faceted Jewish and general communities in Georgia and around the world. At a time when eyewitnesses to the Holocaust are aging, Jewish material culture in the small towns of the South is disappearing, and hate crimes continue to occur in our society, The Breman’s resources are enduring and relevant.
Education is the cornerstone of Jewish values and culture. It is also the primary purpose of a museum. At The Breman, education goes “beyond the book,” bringing challenging, surprising, inspiring and enriching experiences to all who visit, including more than 20,000 students each year.
In addition to preserving and interpreting Jewish history, The Breman is dedicated to fostering positive Jewish identity and enriching cross-cultural understanding. Through its exhibitions, program and archives, The Breman celebrates Jewish culture, explores the universal theme of human dignity and promotes respect for difference.
EXHIBITIONS
Through its signature exhibitions and special exhibitions, The Breman attracts diverse audiences to educate visitors about Jewish values, customs and traditions. Tzedakkah (righteousness) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) are two such concepts. Exhibitions also highlight universal themes of personal responsibility, community building and cross-cultural understanding.
ARCHIVES
The Breman’s archives hold the memory and documentation of Jewish life in Georgia. The archives contribute greatly to the study of Jewish culture and the humanities, illuminating how Jewish people lived, organized and participated in communities throughout the state. It is the personal stories and historical memorabilia of individuals that provide a springboard for discovery and dialogue.
EDUCATION
The Breman has a strong reputation for educating students and their teachers about the factual history and moral lessons of the Holocaust through sharing the personal testimony of eyewitnesses to the Holocaust who reside in Atlanta. A primary mission of the museum’s educational programs is to promote respect for difference. Educators and students from all beliefs and backgrounds are impacted by the power of that mission.
For example, one assistant principal of a Christian school who attended with her students said, “I feel our students left with a firm understanding of how anyone and any group can be discriminated against.”
Recently a student stated, “My grandfather was a member of the Ku Klux Klan and he didn’t want me to go on a field trip to The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum. My mother told me that was exactly the reason why I had to come with my class.”
The Breman’s educational resources meet selected state curriculum requirements in the areas of: Southern history, including the Civil War and Civil Rights; world history, including World War I and World War II; and ethics. Museum offerings can be incorporated into units in the fine arts, language arts and social studies; science and math; character education and more.
