This presentation will explore Houdini’s life and career in the context of this early twentieth-century Cult of Manhood. Professor Joe Perry, who teaches a course at Georgia State University on “Race and Masculinity in the U.S. South,” will examine Houdini’s carefully crafted public persona, as revealed in his performances, writing, and media image. Much of Houdini’s success and celebrity, Perry suggests, depended on his ability to embrace and exemplify—even to embody—the new male roles at the heart of the emerging Cult of Manhood.
