Baby That is Rock ‘N’ Roll The Leiber/Stoller Era

The Breman Museum and Theatrical Outfit present Baby That is Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Leiber/Stoller Era. The 1950's and 60's were a seminal time in the American popular music. The birth of Rock and Roll. The popularization of folk music. The rise of the singer/songwriter. Baby That is Rock ‘n’ Roll traces the important contributions by Jews, especially Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, to our National Soundtrack. No history of rock can be complete without describing the blockbuster songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller. From crossover hits drenched in R&B like "Hounddog”, "Jailhouse Rock", and "Yackety Yak", to the lyrical and soulful “I’m a Woman” and “Stand By Me”, this duo drew upon their Jewish upbringing and perspective and their immersion in black music to become defining voices of the era. This concert blends songs as well as amusing and poignant anecdotes, painting a picture of Leiber and Stoller’s genius. To further understand this dynamic duo’s achievements and contextualize their cultural moment, we’ll also showcase music by other Jews like Carol King, Bob Dylan, Neil Sedaka, and "Jewish Elvis"- Neil Diamond. The cast and band features seven accomplished local musicians and musical theater veterans. Sing along to dozens of your favorite songs AND learn about the ways that these iconic songwriters' Jewish heritage impacted their artistry.
