Klara with a K

Remembering her mother’s advice to “survive at all costs,” heartbroken Holocaust survivor Klara Werner reinvents herself and begins a new post-war life in the American South.

After liberation from the horrors of Buchenwald Concentration Camp, eighteen-year-old Klara Werner is given a unique opportunity to leave the past behind and forge a new life and fresh identity in the American South.

Driven by her mother’s final advice to “survive at any costs,” she marries the army doctor who treated her after the war and sets off to enjoy unfamiliar freedoms in the city of Atlanta, Georgia.

But covering up her past becomes increasingly burdensome, as Klara begins to realize she has more in common with her husband’s Negro help than with his country club friends. In an era when Jim Crow rules seem eerily similar to the Nuremburg laws that victimized her family, Klara finds solace in standing up for civil rights. But in the end, only a difficult visit from her past will free her from her web of lies.

    Exhibitions

    • Chasing Dreams : Baseball & Becoming American

This exhibition weaves together America’s favorite pastime, baseball, and its role in creating a national identity. Through films, footage, photographs, and a database of American Jewish ballplayers, Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American explores how baseball historically played a crucial role in understanding, and sometimes challenging, what it means to be American.

    • Vedem Underground: The Secret Magazine of Terezin : Vedem Underground

The exhibition examines the historic, cultural, and artistic legacy of VEDEM, a literary magazine written by courageous Jewish boys imprisoned at Terezin, a concentration camp and ghetto in German-occupied Czechoslovakia. The magazine was the only underground publication to be regularly produced by Nazi prisoners.
