Biographical/Historical Note:  Irwin Brener “Irv” Giffen was born on October 13, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Israel L. Giffen (1884-1951) and Diana Brener Giffen (1890-1983). He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and married Helen Margaret Lurio (1926-1993) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He served as the Executive Director of the Savannah Jewish Council for many years as well as the President of the Jewish Educational Alliance. Irwin and Helen had two children, Ira (b. 1953) and Debra (1955-2012). The family were members of Congregation Agudath Achim. Irwin Giffen died at his son’s home in Tacoma, Washington, on August 18, 1988, at age 66.

Scope and Content:  This small collection contains materials collected by Irwin B. Giffen in his capacity as the Executive Director of the Jewish Educational Alliance (JEA) in Savannah, Georgia. Many of these materials are from before he became Executive Director, and one is even from before he was born, so it is unclear how he came into possession of those items. Of particular interest to researchers may be The Scroll, a pamphlet published by the JEA in 1916, originally belonging to Morris Rabhan (1895-1983), as well as some of the Annual Meeting programs.
