Summary/Abstract:  Solomon Sutker was a native Georgian. He attended Emory University and the University of North Carolina. The papers contain his thesis, “The Jews of Atlanta: Their Social Structure and Leadership Patterns,” submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, as well as a couple of other writings on Jewish Atlanta.

Biographical/Historical Note:  Solomon Sutker was born on March 17, 1918, in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Emory University and the University of North Carolina where he met his wife to be, Sara Smith Sutker. Sol and Sara both received their Ph.D.s in sociology and taught at Oklahoma State University, the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and the University of Missouri at St. Louis. When they retired they returned to Atlanta and lived near the Emory University campus. Sara passed away in 1983 and Solomon passed away in 2000.

Scope and Content Researchers studying the Solomon Sutker Family Papers will gain insight into scholarship related to Jewish life in Atlanta. All material is arranged in alphabetical order by subject and chronologically within each folder.
