Biographical/Historical Note:  The National Council of Jewish Women, (NCJW) Atlanta Section was founded in 1895 when a small group of Jewish women met at The Temple (Hebrew Benevolent Congregation) to form a local chapter of the national organization that had been established two years earlier in New York.  The first president was Rebecca Solomons Alexander. In the early years the Atlanta Section acted as the Sisterhood of The Temple.  Dr. David M. Marx, the Rabbi of The Temple acted as advisor to the fledging organization.  From the beginning the Council was concerned with community service and was instrumental in the formation of the Free Kindergarten Association, a Sabbath School for newly arriving immigrant children, and the Jewish Educational Alliance, a non-sectarian settlement house for immigrants. In its infancy the Atlanta Section also became involved in political issues such as the Federal Child Labor Bill and the 8-hour labor law. Over the ensuing decades, NCJW, Atlanta Section remained steadfast in supporting issues relating to women, children and education.  In the 1920s Council sponsored free hygiene programs to school-age children; offered classes in child psychology, worked on the Fulton County illiteracy board and provided scholarships for the children at the Hebrew Orphans’ Home. The Atlanta Section also worked tirelessly to assist persons displaced by both World Wars. Across the United States Councils were instrumental in bringing 390 children from Germany to the United States.  The local section also provided housing and furniture to older immigrants who settled in Atlanta, establishing English classes and discussion groups to help ease resettlement .Following World War II and up to the present National Council of Jewish Women, Atlanta Section has continued to provide needed assistance to Jewish and general communities locally, nationally and internationally.  The many projects are too numerous to list, but the good work of the Section continues to provide assistance to worthy and vital causes.

Scope and Content:  The National Council of Jewish Women, Atlanta Section Records, 1895-1996, are divided into four series: Series I, Administrative Files, consists of the administrative files of the Council including bulletins, minutes, financial records and yearbooks. Series II, Projects and Issues, consists of the records relating to the numerous programs and issues in which the Council was involved.  Most of these records concern child care issues and date from the 1960s-1980s.  The earlier program files could not be located.  Additional files relating to Council’s activities in the 1930s-1950s can be found in the Atlanta Jewish Federation Records and in the Georgia Farm School and Resettlement Records. Series III, Conferences and Conventions, consists of files from international, national and interstate conventions attended by the Atlanta Section. Series IV, Scrapbooks, consists of scrapbooks.
