Biographical/Historical Note:  Jacob H Rothschild (1900 - 1993) was born on December 18, 1900. He died on March 15, 1993 at 92 years of age.  Jacob H. Rothschild a Columbus native, well known Columbus business and civic leader.  He was president of the Rothschild Company, an upholstery manufacturing firm with headquarters in Columbus.  He was active in many civic and community organizations.  Some of his accomplishments include chairman of the Columbus Hospital Authority, past president of the Columbus Rotary Club, past chairman Board of Trustees of the Columbus College Foundation, Inc., president of the Executive Club.  Mr. Rothschild was “a man of outstanding leadership qualities” who demonstrated a special ability for resolving difficult human problems in fair and equitable manner.”    In addition to his business and civic interest, he was a great family man and a faithful member of Temple Israel, having served on its Board as president.

Dora Goettinger Rothschild, born May 2, 1902 in Strassbourg, France, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max S. Goettinger.  She was adopted by her uncle Benno Goettinger of Atlanta, Ga in 1911.  Included in this collection are correspondence from Dora’s brothers, Gabriel and Max and Robert.  Mrs. Rothschild belonged to Temple Israel of Columbus and the Jewish Ladies’ Aid Society.  Ms. Rothschild was involved in Columbus chapter of Georgia Diabetes Association and was its secretary for many years.  She also was active in the Museum Guild, Columbus Symphony Guild, St. Francis Hospital Guild and the Century Club.

Jacob and Dora married in Atlanta, Ga in 1923 and lived their remaining life in Columbus, Ga.  They had one son, Benno Rothschild.  Benno married Babette Meyer and they had four children.

Scope and Content:  Researchers studying the Jacob and Dora Rothschild Papers will gain insight into Jews in the South and as small business owners, particular those that traveled for business during 1920 and 1930. The papers are arranged in alphabetical order by subject and chronologically within each folder.
