Biographical/Historical Note: The Savannah Jewish Federation (SJF), originally incorporated as the Savannah Jewish Council (SJC), was founded in 1943 by twenty two local Jewish organizations and twelve original members. The Council changed its name to the Savannah Jewish Federation in December 1985 to better define its work and resemblance to other federations. The purpose of the organization is to provide a centralized group in charge of raising, collecting, and distributing funds to causes and institutions that are in general interest or affecting the welfare of Savannah’s Jewish residents. It is dedicated to preserving and enriching Jewish life throughout Savannah and to perpetuating identification with the State of Israel. It began with the primary purpose of raising money one month each year for Jewish charities and works closely with the United Jewish Appeal, the American Joint Distribution Committee, and the Jewish Agency for Israel.  Over the years, many committees have been formed including Social Services, Armed Services, Community Relations, and Young Leadership. All of the committees are committed to providing funds and services for the Savannah Jewish community within their capacity. The Savannah Jewish Federation has a history of strongly supporting the Jewish community in Savannah, in the United States as well as internationally.  The Savannah Jewish Federation is affiliated with the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA).

Scope and Content: The Savannah Jewish Federation (SJF) records contain a wide variety of materials including correspondence, manuals, meeting minutes, reports and surveys, programs, rosters, constitutions, clippings, ledgers, handwritten notes, photographs, proclamations, audiocassettes and yearbooks. Although a good portion of the records are from SJF files, numerous records were found in notebooks. Several of these notebooks were water damaged and copies had to be made in order to preserve the records. Some of the materials concern related organizations such as the Jewish Educational Alliance and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. The collection includes materials throughout the life of the Savannah Jewish Federation, starting with records of the United Jewish Appeal in 1942, and continuing on to 2007.  Of particular note in this collection is a document found in Box 10, Folder 4, a 1961 letter from a Savannah Jewish Council representative to the American Jewish Committee discussing the Jewish reaction (or lack thereof) to desegregation in Savannah.
