Biographical/Historical Note: Gisela Meyer Spielberg was born on September 29, 1926 in Berlin, Germany to Jewish German World War One veteran Henrich Meyer and his wife Lieselotte Kohn. The family, including a younger sister Eirka born 1930, suffered the rising antisemitism in Germany following Hitler’s rise to power in 1933. Through family connections and luck, the family was able to escape to England weeks before war broke out in Europe and eventually made their way to the United States where they finally settled in Atlanta, GA.

Scope and Content: Documents cover German reparation payments, life in Atlanta and Europe directly post-WW2, and the family’s escape from Germany in 1939.
