Summary/Abstract:  Irving Zulie Harris was a Birmingham, Alabama chemist, industrialist, and Jewish community leader.  Harris was the president of the wholesale drug company Veltex Co.  He was the past president and chairman of The United Jewish Welfare Fund.  His papers consist of awards, personal and professional correspondence, certificates, newspaper clippings, family documents and papers, along with company logs, memorabilia and promotional materials.

Arrangement:  The Irving Zulie Harris Family Papers are arranged alphabetically by folder description and chronologically within each folder. 

Biographical/Historical Note:  Irving Zulie Harris was a chemist, industrialist and Jewish community leader.  Harris was born Isidore Zulie Horovitz in Savannah Georgia on August 2, 1895, to Romanian father Rubin Horovitz and mother Meintza (Seligman). (mother’s first name listed as Muncie in the birth certificate) (The birth certificate, delayed, has the name listed as Isadore.  The declaration of name change has the name listed as Isidore.)  His name was changed legally in 1931 to Irving Zulie Harris.  (Declaration of name change documents have the date of legal name change as July 22, 1931.   An analytical report from 1950 has the name change date listed in the year 1933) Irving Zulie Harris was married to Pauline (Berkowtiz), they had a daughter Carol in 1937.

Irving Zulie Harris graduated from the University of Georgia’s School of Pharmacy in Athens, Georgia in 1915 and arrived in Birmingham, Alabama in 1926.  Irving Zulie Harris headed the Veltex Co., Inc. in which cosmetics and medicines were manufactured and patented.  Numerous subsidiaries existed under the umbrella of the Veltex Company, such as Dolly Mayson and Vi-Co. Sales Company.  Harris’s work as a pharmacist and research chemist included the blending of perfumes and essential oils; manufacturing medicines; flavors; home needs and cosmetics through both national and international distribution.  Some of Veltex’s most famous products included Virdol, a form of pain relief; Solid Comfort Foot Soap; and the “finest white shoe polish in the world”.  Irving Zulie Harris was also one of the founders of the Vulcan Chemical Company.    

Along with Irving Zulie Harris’s work as a chemist and industrials, he was a Jewish community leader.  Harris was a former president and chairman of the United Jewish Welfare Fund, past president of B’nai B’rith, as well as an active member of the Anti-Defamation League.  Irving Zulie Harris was a member of Macon, Georgia and Scottish Rite’s Masonic Lodge, and a Shriner with the Zamora Temple of Birmingham, Alabama. 

Scope and Content:  Researchers examining the Irving Zulie Harris Family Papers can gain insight into Southern Jewish life, the field of chemistry, pharmacy and Birmingham industry in the early to mid-1900’s.  Researchers can also discover the mission and work behind the National Jewish Welfare Fund.  The papers are arranged alphabetically by folder description and chronologically within each folder.
