Summary/Abstract:  These papers reflect upon the activities of native Atlantan Helen Alperin with the bulk of materials from the 1940s, but also containing a few items from the early 1900s to 2012. Her photo albums, scrapbooks, and documents show her involvement with the Zionist youth organizations Young Judea, its spinoff organization Judateens, Junior Hadassah, and the Intercollegiate Zionist Federation. She also documented her attendance at many Young Judea conventions and Brandeis Leadership Institute and Camp Oldshine TN. This collection shows her teen and young adult years spent attending Girl’s High and Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. It contains commencement programs, ration cards, funeral programs, invitations, a family history manuscript written by cousin Celia Draisen Goldberg Freed, articles written by daughter Michele Alperin, report-cards, autograph books, scrapbooks, photo albums, newspaper clippings, newsletters, rosters, and a minute book, 1940-1941, from Judateens, a chapter of Young Judaea

Biographical/Historical Note:  Helen Goldman Alperin was a graduate of Girl’s High in 1944. During her youth in the 1940s she was very active in Junior Hadassah, Young Judea, Judateens, Intercollegiate Zionist Federation and attended many Jewish leadership development camps such as the Brandeis Leadership Institute and Camp Oldshine TN. In 1947 she was named the secretary for the Inter-Collegiate Zionist Federation of America.  Helen Goldman Alperin was first person in her family to attend college, and she graduated from Agnes Scott in 1948 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. In 1950, she married Joseph Alperin, and they had three children together, Michele, Harvey, and Cheryl. She was the Sisterhood President at Beth El Synagogue. She was a lifetime Hadassah Member, a board member at Ahavath Achim Synagogue, and a longtime tour guide for Guidelines Atlanta.  She was an avid crafter, painting china as well as  knitting and crocheting with the group Jewish Family and Career Services for MUST ministries, Grady Hospital, and Chemoflague. She was an active volunteer at Ahavath Achim Synagogue library.

Scope and Content:  Researchers examining these papers can gain insight into young Jewish life in Atlanta during WWII, and learn about women’s education in Atlanta. Researchers may learn about the Zionist youth organizations such as Young Judaea, Judateens, and the Inter-Collegiate Zionist Federation. All material is arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically within each folder.
