    Susan Kessler Barnard has been active in her community for a long time. Since her second child was born with a developmental disability she became an activist for her son and other kids like him. She worked with others in the late 1970s to mid-1980s to found the Atlanta Group Home, a shared home where adults with developmental disabilities could have more freedom and independence. She also helped to expand the Havanah Sunday School Program in the 1970s so that disabled kids would be better cared for and taught in ways that were tailored to their needs.
